About Teach Manchester and its objectives
Our mission statement … We want to ensure that the journey from early years, through to primary, secondary and college is a positive one with child-centred learning at its heart – creating confident, resilient learners.
What makes us tick?
We are confident that the culture of our group has been a central factor in our track record of success.
We view culture as having two elements:
- the things that we believe in
- the way we operate.
We have context of place and focus. Our group benefits from enormous collective wisdom, experience and expertise, gained from working in urban contexts and thereby strengthening the offer we are able to make to Manchester schools, academies and colleges. This is not something necessarily provided by other organisations.
The things we believe in and how we operate
- The power of collaboration and partnership
- That growth as a group comes from joint working and debate
- ‘We are in it for the long term’, not for profit
- We are ethical leaders, driven by purpose and focused on the achievement of the best possible outcomes for children, pupils, students and young people.
- We are generous – and promote the strengths of one another
- We are motivating and inspiring to each other
- We tackle projects in a solution-focused, creative, discerning way
- We work to support optimum outcomes by expecting and aiming for the best: the best education for Manchester children; the best teachers; the best leaders in urban education; the best system leadership.
Our vision and goal
is for every child to be taught
by an outstanding teacher
The support we provide
We have significant expertise in special education, ensuring that the distinctive needs and interests of special schools always remain on our agenda.
- We are key partners for the Manchester Local Authority and the Manchester School Improvement Partnership
- Through our extensive work in initial teacher education, we have developed strong and productive partnerships with universities, including The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University
- As school and college leaders, we reflect the full length of the development journey from early years to sixth form.
Why do we exist?
To enable learners – children and young people in Manchester – to start well, live
well, and age well
- To ensure equality of opportunity and positive social mobility
- To drive the highest of expectations – regardless of everyone’s starting point – according to their ability and needs – securing the very best outcomes for all
- To ensure the best life chances and choices for all.
What are our key goals?
The very best education provision for all Manchester children and young people.
- A collective responsibility for Manchester children and young people shared by all Manchester schools and colleges
- The best teachers and leaders for Manchester schools and colleges
- Recognising Manchester’s unique context and demands: rising successfully to meet those inherent challenges.
How will we judge effectiveness and outcomes?
We build evaluation and feedback from clients into our CPD, school support and teacher education provision. However, many of our output measures, or metrics, are for the long term. These include:
- Increases, over time, in the numbers of schools, academies and colleges requesting and accessing our support, input and guidance and benefiting from our provision – a growing client base
- increases in the proportions of those in leadership positions in Manchester schools and colleges who are ‘home grown’
- Improvements in the rates of progress reflected in the progression routes of Manchester learners as they move through the system, from early years to post-16 education
- Increases in numbers of Manchester learners in employment and enterprise
- Younger generations ‘doing better’ than their parents
- Manchester learners ‘doing better’ than their peers in other Northern cities.

For support to improve performance at your school, our NLEs will meet with the headteacher and senior staff from your school to discuss the challenges you face and what help is needed. Their work will be tailored in partnership with you.
Specialist Leaders of Education Support
For support in developing your leaders with the skills to lead their own teams and improve practice in their own schools, and SLE can help if you want to improve the leadership in a specific subject or specialist area.
We work together to raise standards in our own schools and support others to do the same.
We also deliver School Direct teacher training in Manchester Schools, pioneer exciting approaches to teaching and learning and provide development for new and aspiring school leaders.
